great to hear initiatives re awareness of socialisation/habituation for pups, not only at the owner level but also the breeders - vets and other professionals seem to be slowly getting more savvy about these crucial processes but in my view still sadly lacking at breeder level, yet what happens there is integral to future development/happiness of the dog. the more we hear about this the better so hurray to The Puppy Plan! excellent idea to have charts that can be personalised and fun for all - and at no cost - what's not to like?!

enjoyed the conversation between Carolyn and Karen about so-called 'perfect breed', too. if only more people could think about 'how can i make this dog happy and meet his needs', RATHER THAN 'what dog do i fancy',and the eternal problem of choosing B Collies and the like because they're 'so intelligent'. again more awareness needed at breeder level, and care taken to place their pups in the right homes. at the end of the day, if an owner can't fulfill their dog's needs, the dog won't be happy; and neither will the owner! if you can't do the time, don't do the ..... wrong dog

good stuff about dogs and cats - how often do i hear 'all my animals just have to get on with it' with no thought to the needs of the poor cats. more attention is needed re this subject - i think many cats are out there living unhappily under the shadow of the resident dog because of this attitude, even to the level of 'let them fight it out'. the welfare of the cats seriously compromised and dogs may get badly injured in the process

Poochie Bells! so simple yet what an excellent way to avoid dogs learning to bark for what they want; and expedite housetraining. which in turn may prevent early relinquishment of dogs; and them entering the cycle of home/shelter/home etc

thanks v much - lively and interesting

Hi Vicky! It's an important point. I would consult a qualified, accredited behaviourist to help you since fear can be a tricky one to sort out and can sometimes lead to panic or aggression if not dealt with properly. They will devise a kind and fair socialisation programme but this will take longer and will probably be coupled with a plan that helps to get the young dog to learn that things they feel are unusual or scary are not actually a threat. it takes work and practice but this is all part of the fun of teamwork.

What if your dog hasn't had the chance to go out as a puppy due to illnesses? How do you suggest socialising a 6 month old dog that's already showing fear towards people and dogs it doesn't know?

This article was written in July. Can you believe that this has happened again since then. The same person is resposible for a little girl having to have plastic surgery on her leg. What an idiot!!! Take some damn responsibility for your pet.

At last I have been able to catch up and what a lovely story. It just goes to show that the right owner can make such a difference to any dog. Accepting advice and acting on it is the key.

Hi Karen,
I've got a rescued Rotti that was quite flaky when I got her. All cleared up after putting her onto a good quality dried organic food, introducing oily fish into her diet and washing her with Lush's Soak and Float shampoo bar. Brilliant stuff, works on humans and horses too.

Hi Karen

At every opportunity I will extol the virtues of re homing, rather than buy from a breeder. Sadly the misconception that dogs in rescue are all damaged still prevails, so this story is testament to the real joy that these dogs can bring.

Many thanks for sharing and proving me right!

I am relieved that JS will no longer be given prime time air time demonstrating very outdated, irresposible, unethical, unprofessional, unkind and unfair methods. Sadlly some damage has already been done to the professional dog training and pet dog owning world. Professional dog trainers and behaviourists will have to work with unrealistic expectaions of vulnerable pet dog owners that, believe wrongly that the methods seen on tv are good and effective and will have to readdress and rebalance dog owners expectations. Sadly there are dog owners that will just copy what they saw, putting themselves, their families, visitors, the general public and their dogs at risk. I hope that the BBC have truly learnt something valuable about kind fair effective dog training, dog welfare and proper research prior to selecting an alleged expert in the field of dog training and or behaviour so that this never ever happens again. Well done to everyone that participated in the petition and took action in a professional and united way.
