Today’s advent calendar treat is a fabulous recipe that makes the perfect training treat. It has come from Dr Muriel Brasseur of the Oxford Animal Behaviour Centre, You may also know Muriel as @Widgetty on Twitter. If you love this recipe and would like to know more about the OABC, please contact Dr Muriel via the website, www.oabc.org.uk

And of course, donations to the cause are welcome too.

Let’s get cooking!

Luscious Liver Brownies

This recipe was passed on to me from famous lovely and gorgeous Aussie TV vet Dr Katrina Warren who used to be on Harry’s Practice.

You will need:

  • 1.5kg of liver
  • 1 cup wholemeal flour
  • 2 cups plain flour
  • ½ cup cornmeal (polenta)
  • 25g grated parmesan

What to do:

  1. Blend liver in a food processor until smooth.
  2. Mix remaining ingredients in a bowl, add liver mixture
  3. Spread mixture in a greased, floured tray, sprinkle with extra cornmeal and bake for 30mins in a moderate oven.
  4. Allow to cool.
  5. Cut into small pieces and store in fridge.

This is a special treat, so only feed one or two small pieces a day

  3. I make mine Tuna Treats :- 1lb flour (i used wholewheat as its better for them), 3 eggs, 2 tins tuna, 1 clove garlic, mix altogether and put into a baking tray (lined with greaseproof paper) and cook at a medium heat until golden brown. I also score mine when it comes out of the oven to make it easier to cut into small squares. I then put into individual freeze bags and freeze and take out as and when needed. I’ve also changed the tuna for pilchards.

  6. That looks great I’ll have to try that for the boys! They would also love to have
a gorgeous new collar too as Kaiser is a little too big for his now!! My dogs love
chewing on raw carrots, a cheap and healthy alternative to shop bought dog treats
    :)

  7. Hmmm…I’m afraid my two have to make do with ready-made treats. Closest I come to making something for them is to stuff their Kongs with peanut butter and biscuits, which they really like.
Am sure they would both absolutely love the ones in that recipe though…maybe I should make some as a Christmas treat!

  8. Our 5 Greyhounds love my home made Fishy Oaty biscuits

    200g cooked rice – cold
    200g rolled oats
    200g plain flour

    3 tablespoons cod liver oil
    3 tablespoons sunflower oil
    1 egg
    Water

Mix dry ingredients together. Beat in egg, oils and enough water to make to a dropping consistency.

Spread mixture onto large baking sheet and bake for approx 45 mins. I use the roasting oven of the AGA and move it up a shelf after 30 mins. So gas mark 7 ??? You cant hurt it anyway, its supposed to go crispy ;D When golden brown mark into squares and allow to cool. They freeze well so will last a while :D

  10. I love cooking but as a veggie I hate cooking meat… so I try to buy Mollie natural treats – dried liver, tripe etc. Or I give her natural goat yoghurt, which she has really developed a taste for.

  12. Make food, from scratch….!?!?! I can’t make soup without burning it. Maybe I will wait until a suitably qualified adult can supervise me, before attempting the recipe :)

  13. I might try this one. The last time I made these the recipe had liver & kidney in it and it stank the house out. Then Jez decided she didn’t like it!

  17. 1.5 kilos of liver? Isn’t that going to make a lot of brownies!

(though my lot would be delighted, I’m sure!)

  18. I’ve only been with my new Mum since July, but already my most flavourite treat she bakes for me is crispy hot dogs!

Mum takes a tin of hot dog sausages, slices them really thinly and lays them all out on a baking sheet covered in foil.

She puts them in the bottom of the oven (about 200 deg) when something else is cooking (to save energy).

After about 30 minutes they are ready to come out, she takes them and places them on kitchen paper to absorb any last fat, and when they are cool, they’re ready!

They are the scrummiest, nicest treats, and I love training with them.

  19. I was gonna mention my nice crispy hot dog treats, Mum says they take like bacon scraps, but I see my young bro Coco beat me to it! He beats me to the tennis balls as well but never mind cos I am always first when it comes to hide and seek!

  21. I think that I’m probably too squeamish to be able to handle that much raw liver, but I’m very tempted to have a go at making the fish and peanut butter treat recipes. Thank you!

  23. A quick & easy Peanut butter cookie recipe.
Mix 1/4 cup smooth peanut butter & 1/4 cup milk. Add 1/2 cup self raising wholemeal flour and mix to a sort of dough. Flatten with your hand on work surface to about 1cm and then cut out with a mini cutter (I have one that’s about 1cm across, but it doesn’t matter if they’re bigger – you can even just roll into little balls). Place on baking sheet and bake at 180C for about 20 mins. Allow to cool. My dogs love these.

  31. I’m a very lazy mother, I just put the kitchen fan on and open all the windows, heat the oven and place the liver on a baking tray and put in the oven for 10-20 minutes depending on the size/thickness of the pieces and then cool and cut in chunks. I try to do it in bulk and freeze in portions so I only have to smell the kitchen out every 2 months. :’) But cause it xmas might treat the dog to this fab receipe.
